Terms of service
What you are agreeing to.
Including the part where the software is deliberately slow to remove, and the three routes around it that we are not going to pretend do not exist.
Last updated 19 October 2026
Legal review is pending. These terms will be reviewed by a lawyer before any payment is taken. ViceFree Lock is not on sale and nothing has been charged to anyone.
1. Agreement
These terms are between you and After Hours Technologies LLC, a California limited liability company that makes ViceFree (“ViceFree”, “we”). By downloading, installing or using ViceFree, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not install it.
2. Who can use this
You must be 18 or older. ViceFree is not licensed to, sold to, or intended for minors. It is not a tool for monitoring anyone else. It is for an adult installing it on their own computer, for themselves.
3. Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use ViceFree on computers you own or control, for your own use. You may not resell it, redistribute it, or sublicense it.
4. How the software behaves: read this part
ViceFree is designed to make certain actions slow on purpose. By installing it you are asking for that.
4.1 The 24 hour gate. On ViceFree Lock, the following are requests rather than actions: pausing, unblocking a domain, and uninstalling. A request is filed now and can be confirmed no earlier than 24 hours later. Tightening is always instant. There is no instant uninstall on Lock, no override, and no emergency unlock. This is a term of the licence, not a defect.
4.2 ViceFree Free. On ViceFree Free there is no gate. Pausing from the pill or the tray icon is instant and lasts as long as you like, and uninstalling is immediate.
4.3 You remain an administrator. ViceFree does not change your Windows account, does not remove your administrator rights, and does not lock you out of your own machine. You retain the technical ability to remove the software through deliberate administrative effort.
4.4 Tamper events. Attempts to stop the service, edit its configuration, delete its files, or remove it outside the gate are recorded in a local log on your machine. You consent to that local logging by installing. On ViceFree Lock, those events are also sent to us as they happen and included in an email to you the next morning. They go to you and nobody else. What each event contains is described in the privacy policy.
5. Acceptable use
Use ViceFree only on devices you own or are authorised to control, and only for its intended purpose. Do not use it to monitor another person without their knowledge and consent. Do not distribute modified versions of it.
6. What we do not promise
ViceFree does not block all pornographic content, and we do not claim that it does. The blocklist written into your computer’s hosts file is 125 domains, a curated list of the majors. The address bar check uses a larger list of more than 800,000 adult sites. Neither list is exhaustive.
Three routes get around network blocking, and we name them rather than imply otherwise:
- A browser configured to use a DNS-over-HTTPS provider the policy does not cover.
- A VPN.
- A raw IP address.
When ViceFree is on, the screen layer will miss some explicit content and will sometimes cover content that is not explicit. We do not publish an accuracy figure for it, and nothing in these terms, or anywhere else on this site, should be read as promising one.
ViceFree does not cover devices other than the Windows computer it is installed on. It is not effective against a determined person with administrative access and technical knowledge. It is not a substitute for professional help, medical advice, or any treatment programme.
The 24 hour gate is a delay, not a guarantee. It makes loosening slow, deliberate and logged. It does not make it impossible.
7. Data
Our handling of your data is described in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.
8. Payment, renewals and refunds
Payments are not open yet, and ViceFree Lock is not on sale. When they open, our order process will be conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com will be the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns. For help with the software itself, write to hello@bevicefree.com. This section describes what will apply once payments open.
ViceFree Lock is free during the launch period. When paid plans open, Lock will be billed at $19.99 per month or $149 per year and will renew automatically until cancelled; we will email you at least 30 days before any charge applies.
Cancel, and the lock comes off right away.
The rule behind that sentence: when you cancel ViceFree Lock, or your subscription ends in any other way (including through a failed payment), the lock is released at once and your installation returns to ViceFree Free, unless you chose the option below. On ViceFree Free, blocking continues, and pausing or uninstalling is instant, as described in 4.2. Cancelling stops future charges.
Option to keep the lock. When you set up ViceFree Lock, you may choose to keep the lock for 24 hours after you cancel or after your subscription otherwise ends, including through a failed payment. If a request to loosen ViceFree (a pause, an unblock, an uninstall or a less strict filter) is already pending at that moment, the lock is kept only for what remains of that request’s wait. You may turn this option on at any time, with immediate effect. Turning it off is a request like any other loosening, and can be confirmed no earlier than 24 hours later.
Refunds: 14 days, in full, no questions. A refund ends your subscription, so the rule above applies: the lock is released at once, or 24 hours later if you chose to keep it. See the refund policy.
9. Updates
ViceFree installs its own updates. It checks for a new release shortly after it starts and then about every six hours, and you can also ask it to check from the control center. Every update and every blocklist update is verified before it runs, and an update can only replace ViceFree’s own programs: it cannot change your settings, your plan or the gate. By installing ViceFree you agree to it updating itself this way. The installer itself is not code-signed, so Windows shows a SmartScreen warning the first time you run it. We may discontinue updates for old versions.
10. Disclaimer of warranties
ViceFree is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will block any particular domain or any particular content.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, ViceFree is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill. Our total liability arising out of these terms is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
12. Termination
You may terminate by uninstalling. On ViceFree Lock, uninstalling runs through the 24 hour gate described in 4.1. We may terminate your licence if you materially breach these terms, for example by using ViceFree on someone else’s device without their consent.
13. Changes
We may update these terms. Material changes will be notified to customers before they take effect. Continuing to use ViceFree after that means you accept them.
14. Our data and software
14.1 The app, its block lists, category lists, detection models and other data (together, “our data”) are licensed to you, not sold. You may use them only through the app, to protect your own computers under these terms.
14.2 You may not, and may not help or allow anyone else to:
- copy, extract, export, scrape or reuse all or a substantial part of our data, whether at once or bit by bit;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the app, or try to recover our data or source code from it, except where the law allows this and the right cannot be waived;
- use our data to build, train, test or improve another product, service, list, model or dataset;
- remove, disable or get around any technical measure that protects our data.
14.3 If you break this section, we may end your licence to use the app. We may also use any remedy the law gives us, including database rights where they apply.
14.4 This section does not limit anything the licence of our open source software, such as the ViceFree Free browser extension, allows you to do.
